After gazing at the immersive cover art for what seemed like an age I finally pressed start. To which I was greeted by caustic, mind-bending rays of synthesizer landing at the point where you can instantly see the ice melting scenario unfold. Mercifully however, Cherry Red Neon Blues soothes the tension a touch next as poetic tales, underscored by a softer flow of sound, overlap at the edges of emotion while ten plus minutes effortlessly pass you by. The heart wrenching keys of Crymes Of The Zodiaq then fall into place and it’s that direct simplicity which operates so powerfully here, connecting to an almost out there reality of free Jazz.
Darkness is switched on again with the arrival of Theory X -v- Theory Y and the full force of locomotive steam blisters, cracking the bustling airwaves with unquiet suggestion. Voices are reimagined again (or at least I think it’s a voice) on Melting Ice where you get the feeling of lonely expanse and the white, cold heat of a winter’s dawn. The remaining pieces taking you towards the inevitable abyss of the album’s end are also substantial, deeply engaging movements of sonic exploration. Splitting your psyche, carving out different directions of travel, parting like waves. And much like the composition of ice itself vanishing into thin air. Leaving a new formula remaining in forever motion.
