Matt Edwards and Patrick Mason combine talents to produce this temptingly devilish release for the always on point Rekids. In days of easily acquired tame, repetitive instrumentation it’s refreshing to hear spoken words which cause and impact upon your soul. The message in Elevate does just that as the tough, funky and deeply intense rhythms of the track tease and tear at the stereo in tandem. A timely Acapella care of Mason is also included as is an excellent, probing Dub version should the voices frighten you. Second original, Nasty then completes with a nod to pounding 90’s styled Tribal madness and an uncompromising sting via its fierce lyrical expression. Continued excellence.

P.Leone Q&A

Hello and welcome to Magazine Sixty, P.Leone. Your new release for Rekids Special Projects: Chances We Take EP features four very hot tracks. Could you talk us through how you produced Rose Petal Breaks and where the idea for the title came from?

The idea for Rose Petal Breaks came to life by wanting to combine some home made breaks I finished which I didn’t have a means of using. The title was really just a play on words – seemingly light but not at all really.

How did you team up with the label? And what does having your music released on a vinyl-only series mean to you?

I met Matt Edwards through Spencer Parker…Spen suggested I send over some files to Matt and the rest is history. It’s my first time being a part of a vinyl only series and I think it’s something that is absolutely timeless. I’m extremely thankful for that.

How and where did you learn to produce music?

Loads and loads of trial and error in software and hardware, not to mention absolutely harassing my close friends who had been producing for a bit longer than I have 🙂

How have you found the experience of setting up your own label E-MISSIONS, along with Caizzo? And can you share with us any future plans for developing it?

It’s always hard learning all the inner workings of something, particularly because it was so new to myself and Caiazzo. I’d say after 002 it just became a sort of formula which I think is usually the case with new labels – finding that formula that works and just repeating that over and over again. In terms of future plans… hmmmmm got some humans – specifically two of ‘em! A duo from DC making some of the best techno I’ve heard in years and I can’t wait to put out their record…

The artwork for the label looks really impressive. Who designs it? And can you tell us about the concept behind it?

Huge shout out to one of our close friends who has been with us since day one and has absolutely turned any idea me and Caiazzo had into a reality – Alex Seamens AKA Cranks. In terms of the concept it’s just whatever we can think of within the moment. Sometimes it’s relevant to the actual project and sometimes its not. What Alex is able to do is really incredible and it just gets better when he goes off and gets really creative because he understands the labels aesthetic – we really got lucky with having him on board <3

How would you compare the experience of New York with living in Berlin?

Well they’re two very different cities. Berlin clubs thrive later than most clubs around the world. For someone like myself, who is born and raised in New York, I can’t truly compare the cities. However, even though Berlin is so important for my career and I’m truly falling in love with it, no matter what New York will always be my first love

You are due to play back in New York at Le Bain on February 23 to celebrate the EP’s release? How did the event get organised and how did it feel to play at the night?

Playing at Le Bain for the ‘Chances We Take’ release party was really special and I had some butterflies …nobody wants to blow it at their own release party so I’m happy it went really well!

And finally. What are your thoughts on Techno in general? Do you feel that it is in a healthy, moving-forward position and what is exciting you about 2018?

I think it’s forever growing! And it’s beautiful to see more and more artists be welcomed by it or drawn towards it. I don’t think there’s a dance floor in the world that doesn’t need more dancers 😉 In 2018 I think it’s gonna be a year where I do my best to show some experimentation not too too far from my original projects but I guess to stretch my legs out a bit!

Radio Slave – Another Club / Feel The Same – Rekids

Words like naked and brutal may trip off the tongue when describing this 100th landmark release from Matt Edwards’ always stunning Rekids. Which while true doesn’t deny the intrinsic brilliance of these productions. Living life on a knife-edge may also generate the same emotions but then aren’t these the times we are forced to live with. Reflecting that nature Another Club ignites dangerous electronics over a series of booming beats plus sizzling hi-hats and a spoken diatribe that very much gets under your restless skin. Feel The Same, almost comes as a light relief though is no less epic in scale with reassuringly familiar vocals looped across urgent, jarring synth notes plus quick-fire stabs delivering the promise of yet more.

Conceived as an aural tribute to the ‘Hansa recording studios’ on Köthener Straße No. 38 in Berlin, this long player courtesy of Matt Edwards (aka Radio Slave) and Thomas Gandey (aka Cagedbaby) not only boasts purely live instrumentation but also the transcendent atmosphere of the music produced. Hansa was made famous by the likes of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Tangerine Dream and Depeche Mode, amongst many significant others and is obviously a hard act to follow with the album taking its main inspiration from Bowie’s 1977 masterpiece Low. The result is a suitably stunning experience which blends a rich mixture of beats and percussion augmented by an intense musicality that is as far away from the mindless repetition of Tech House as you could imagine. Indeed, you could for example say that the piano played on Piano 2 Variation 4 has been spiritually guided. Or, try soaking up the haunting, ambience triggered by Hansa itself complete with taught electro drums, while the concluding title track ends on a wash of Fender Rhodes echoing your imagination to hear the excellence all over again…

Hipp-e and Halo’s distinctive release from just under ten years ago now gets revitalised via an excellent set of remixes transforming this gem directly into 2014. Beginning with Yousef’s great version that sets addictive organ notes against a fiery backdrop of hypnotic percussion and pulsating beats this is built for the repeat button. The Space Coast take is next combining sparkling synths and tough bass, followed by Sneak’s relentless attack on the senses. Franck Roger’s outstanding funky bassline driven remix then scores high, while DJ Buck adds a cool Disco flavour with a twist. Craig Richards then defies expectations by dropping the tempo into darker territory with a heavy dose of sound effects, leaving Adam Shelton to pick up the pace once again with another suitably punchy rendition that rocks the floor. All good.

2020 Vision

Surpassing the computer functionality of the title this strips it back to basics via a pumping House beat and accompanying bassline. Not quite so sure about the vocal line despite its obvious catchiness but then there is always a great Dub version to contend with. Or, the excellent PBR Streetgang Remix which transforms the vocal into filtered nirvana via an array of swirling synths and an ecstatic arrangement. Second track, The Project delves deeper again with a detuned vocal loop, as does the addictive The Pattern which is complimented by a first rate rhythm section.

What’s not to like about this. After all if breathy vocal deliveries and syncopated basslines backed up by punchy drumming are your thing then this is just right on the opening, ‘Miss White’. While the title track has a restrained yet slightly epic feel to it care off a rousing chorus line backed-up by Dave Robertson’s vocals and atmospheric instrumentation. Who then re-appears as Cameo Culture for the remix by adding a funkier attitude to the proceedings. Finally, Second Fiddle again weaves the delicate vocals through a musical fabric that sounds playful and enjoyable.
