I have been reviewing music for over thirty years and it astonishes me that sounds remain as tantalising, exciting as they ever were. Listening to Penny Rimbaud & Kate Shortt’s soaring, searing ripping apart of anything remotely traditional works wonderfully in all sorts of ways. I don’t really care about the word experimental anymore because anything that exists outside of melodic formula is, besides doesn’t this free-flow of sonic reality reflect the chaos of living better more than boy meets whoever blah blah blah.
Caliban Records is a new imprint from Penny and this initial release is a combination of cellist Kate Shortt and his manipulations of those sounds created. Sometimes it’s easy to say music could be best appreciated in particular locations or at times of day or night but I’m not sure that applies here. Which is a good thing. Let the freedom of the music do the talking. Listen below and make up your own mind.
