Berlin-based Musician and DJ Luca Venezia, aka Curses has created a fantastically exciting selection of music from past to present, highlighting the darker edges of the hidden corners beneath the foundation stones of club culture. Not so much bright and shiny but grainier, more tangible in essence.
The first chapter of this huge compilation begins with the coterie of names including those belonging to Throbbing Gristle, Malcom McLaren, DAF and Nitzer Ebb. A selection of artists that were omnipresent throughout the 1980’s and who of course remain impactful with their influence today. In a sense nothing has sounded like, or has been quite the same since. Maybe that’s how it should be? Time and place alongside the adjacent culture are determining factors in the equation. However, thankfully its not simply about past glories for as importantly is the celebration of new artists such as Dina Summer, Dame Area and Dame Bonnet & Mufti. Plus a host of others represented here who all continue to fly flags inspired by the sounds and attitudes initially exposed back in the 1980’s, while continuing to add their own contemporary flair to the blueprint. Likewise, Curses also touches upon gothic nirvana in the shape of his new Silver Tears escapade, alongside Argentinean producer Skelesys, with Always Shine (Wait For The Rain).
Spread across the three unfolding chapters the music spans the heights of sight and sound surrounding electronic music compelled by a defiant edge, less bothered with the charts, more radical, burning with more insatiable desire than that. It’s an exciting, thrilling ride throughout this landscape of fast, slow, and grey areas amid the bright, white heat of crunching drum machines, fiery synthesizers and occasionally disconcerting voices. All together, there is nothing else like this.
