Greg Fenton reviews Sulk Rooms – Take A Look At God’s Face – SUBEXOTIC
This is the soundtrack to 2022’s Take A Look At God’s Face written and directed by Jack Laurance, featuring a composition of sounds by Thomas Ragsdale aka Sulk Rooms. You could say the music scores a simmering, malcontent etched out by intensely heavy strains of sound as on the dark brilliance of Know Your Customer Intimately however that would not open your mind to the proceeding warmth of A Dear Friend. There are contrasts to be found but overall the series of pieces are about tension and doubt at their heart, yet are intently crafted to cause maximum impact. My favourite number on the album is Warm Cotton Sheets serving up four minutes of delicious, bass fuelled glory in its wake. While the completing They Don’t Believe It returns to beautifully played keys suggesting the hope of possibility in the end.
