Magazine Sixty Music Review with Samuel Rohrer

Greg Fenton reviews Samuel Rohrer – MUSIC FOR LOVERS – Arjunamusic Records

Samuel Rohrer speaks a musical language like no other conversing in terms of pure percussion and modular synthesis evolving across a never-ending vista of stereo fields always fuelled by the art of imagination. Listening to MUSIC FOR LOVERS is like conversing with time and movement suggesting an equal act of relaxation and invigoration in similar time scales. While words may never be spoken you will always understand their serious intent loud and clearly.

Despite the deceptive title the album is very much about the signature of engagement while exploring a deeper, funky assault on the necessary senses. As with his previous compositions beauty is found within the rhythm and the interplay between free-flowing electronics where you can always hear the echo of jazz alongside the inquisitive pulse of more radical thinking.

Sounds create atmospheres alongside the drum’s heartbeats as the evocative fizz of synthesised soul often suggests as many questions as it does provide answers. From the haunting, heavenly trumpets blown by Nils Petter Molvaer across The Gift to the following dance through arpeggios and gathering of strange motifs on the beautifully crafted Celestial Body each piece of music provides its own rich rewards. Much as the conversely twisted funkiness of Love and Warfare or the edgier Rewired Paradise suggests there is always more to be revealed in the hidden depths of this fantastically creative music, in this instance by blends of supercool Rhodes and an intensity of immersive, expressive drumming. In Samuel Rohrer‘s case that is most definitely, always true.
