Greg Fenton reviews Phil Kieran – Artificial Analogue – PKR
Phil Kieran always brings his own hot take to music. Whether that’s reimagining the 1980s-styled arpeggios driving this track forward in fifth gear (cars are important in all this) or at the edges of orchestral expanse on his work The Strand Cinema Live with The Ulster Orchestra. Influences are channelled as a never-ending excitement of oscillating wildly in various directions and then reassembled as something new. Something tempting and exciting.
Artificial Analogue , as the name suggests, gets plugged into a catalogue of fiery analogue synthesizers creating a distinctive energetic buzz while never straying too far from hints of melody without words. And that sense of hypnotic musicality running throughout this 40th release on the label also defines what’s so special. That and the wild, enticing stereo of the Dub version as the notes bounce feverishly around the airwaves, amid dramatic stabs and taught punctuating yet cool, shuffling drums. Lovely. And epic.
