Greg Fenton reviews Millsart – X-Ray Zulu – Axis Records
It’s like you’re reading a novel lost in the intensity of the plot, something to do with a detective discovering something mysterious and strange. The further you detail the revelations the more enthralled you become. The music created by Millsart doesn’t conform to any particular narrative apart from its own demonstrating the power of sound to excite in ways that aren’t simply formulaic or functional. If there is an air of nostalgia it is perhaps for the timeless belief that music has the power to transform.
Obviously, the rich vein of jazz is ever present, as are rhythms and musical interplay, especially on the piano-led Methane Bubbles. Also, try the electro pulse driving the curious and wonderful Transistor Love. Plus the soothing charm of Just Like A (Vernacular Objects), and the otherworldly spaces located within Peace From The Virgo Cluster. Either you will not falter along the path of discovery.
Release: January 26
