Greg Fenton reviews Marino (Be) – Witzelsucht – Archipel Musique Canada
Why do I like Witzelsucht? Because it transports you into the far reaches of somewhere you’re not entirely familiar with like a newfound location full of curious surprises. The sounds are loaded with expectation, charging the senses and imagination while discovering new pathways into electrical discourse. Music as atmosphere as emotional communication stretches far beyond the lazy clique of obvious melody or the dull bruise of overused words this all feels more informative than that.
Beats occasionally surface such as on Lurn but for the most part, rhythm doesn’t seem essential to the story being told or the ideas being touched upon as numbers dance around darker resess. However, the breath of light is a joyous reward for the gorgeous Le Siècle Des Lumières (listen below). There is also an expanded edition cumulating in an hour’s worth of pleasure to soak up.
Perhaps the most conventional track (if that’s what you’re looking for) referencing danceable music here is Nelk, whose techno-induced stabs unfold over pulsating kick drums. However, ending the album Svel soon returns to the source of much of the music here, seeing a strange concoction of hotwired synthesis and mysterious elements plugged into surreal textures of modular conversation.
