Magazine Sixty Music Review with Loleatta Holloway

Greg Fenton reviews Loleatta Holloway – We’re Getting Stronger – SoulMusic Records (SMR)

Catching up on some summer releases not to be missed. Let’s begin with this brilliant compilation from the singer who needs little or no introduction. Her soul-saving voice has graced a string-filled array of classic numbers across the Disco cannon featured on the five solo albums collected here, including various remixes from the likes of Larry Levan and Tom Moulton. With an additional CD hosting several more contemporary versions for the flavour of the modern day, if that’s your desire.

In many ways, it feels like I’m repeating myself in praising Loletta Holloway but her vocals remain timeless, and it’s these very wonderful songs and performances of them that are important to catalogue, not the overflow of continued sample use which feels uncalled for after decades in 2024. This is very much a case of original and best.

Anyway, if you are new to the singer you’re in for a treat. If not, this plays like a great reminder if you need one. Lessons in class and elegance, sheer power, and beauty all in one. Personally, Walter Gibbons’s remix of Hit and Run is forever a masterclass in all of the above, while Dreamin’ sends shivers all over sounding like a perfect caress of emotion.
