Greg Fenton reviews Glåsbird – Glacial Drift – Driftworks

The numbers tick by, dates fizzle from view like you’re experiencing somebody else’s dream. This a beautifully played album that sidesteps unnecessary frills in exchange for depth and the pure art of meaning. Utilising an array of instruments for the purpose, the cello sounds as elegant as the piano, try the ivory swoon contained within 1948. Or the more intense drift of 1968 tearing at pieces and pictures of memories. Or the introduction of guitar picking at the embers of 1975.

Each subsequent date does something else playing with time. Just as drones denote 1986, warmer keys celebrate the glow of 1994 in sublime delight. It must have been a good year to live, much like 2007. The clock stops at 2022 as birds sing while everything left surrounds haunting the ether. It’s a joyous listen in the end.
