Greg Fenton reviews DJ Counselling – Alt-Mobeat
As an artist channeling all that you are into music must prove to be a fearsome trial at times, however, the consequent rewards of such honest, heartfelt expression mean we get to rejoice in its repercussions as light shines brightly at the end of the tunnel.
DJ Counselling’s first album under the alias proves to mean more than most of the other music you will encounter as days and weeks become months and eventually, the sun casts its replenishing shadow. There is a sense that this music dives in head and heart first talking out loud about the outcome, eternal and internal.
As much as the sounds gathered together on Alt-Mobeat signify depth and personal inquiry they also celebrate joy and the breath of being alive. Try the guitar driving Little Grey Ghosts forward, or seek out the uplifting, spine-tingling refrain contained within the bruising production and voices of It’s Perfectly Clear Right Now. The signature sample configurations adorning the gorgeous House Below The Forest Floor, completing the album, are another wonder to behold. Indeed, it feels good to listen to compositions of this particular calibre again.
Alt-Mobeat could also be said to traverse a timeline of events from dusk to dawn beginning with the hazy funk of Intro / The Visit coming down to land on the jazzy reflections of Your Light Cannot Be Extinguished, losing reality as dreams take over. After all, it’s easy to get lost in the intrigue, but equally, that’s part of the excitement, the adventure, likewise finding yourself in the imagination of your own story to tell. This sounds like a time-honoured soundtrack. For the ritual.
