Greg Fenton reviews Dennis Bovell – Sufferer Sounds – Disciples
I found my way to the genius of Dennis Bovell via LKJ in Dub in 1980 which remains a cornerstone of musical brilliance to this day. But music being timeless means you can get on board at any stage to appreciate Dennis Bovell’s extraordinary career in sound. This collection of productions between 1976 – 1980 is enigmatic as they are pristine in execution filling the airwaves full of vitality and the power of imagination like collages of funky pulses emanating directly from one soul to another. The language of rhythm.
Connecting points in history, like the horn blasts inspired by the past on the Dennis Bovell Dub Band, Suffrah Dub lends all of this time, space, and place. It’s an inspiring listen that qualifies moments and events, and as such, I’d heartily suggest pressing play and experiencing it all as God intended. As such, facilitating a rebellion against the contemporary necessity of picking apart essential engagement with attention span.
