Greg Fenton reviews Carlton Doom – Frankenstein – Hypercolour
You could be forgiven for thinking that the fizzing techno stabs greeting you at the arrival point of Mercey From Eden explain all there is to know about Carlton Doom’s new album. You would of course be far from the truth. Try his collaboration with Jamie Nevin U.M. Comet next with theatrical worlds of sound opening up to defy and dispense any cliques as emotive sounds temptingly play while underpinned by the creative flair of imaginative drum programming. From then on you are transported on a trip through breaks, drum and bass roughness, smouldering Acid in the shape of the explosive Lovesick, to the wonderfully upsidedown Wrinkle Cutter (also a brilliant amalgamation of hotwired forever thinking).
You could also dive into the furious Springload or the final Starworm with its grinding array of notes. What happens here, as elsewhere, is the sense of depth present in the music as each track gladly transcends and explores movement and sonic expression. Something is always happening beneath the apparent surface, whether hints of melodic exchange or rhythms altering shape. Carlton Doom has produced idiosyncratic music of note and worth (again).
Release: November 29
