Located at the north-eastern edge of Scotland, around the Orkney Islands, the body of water called Scapa Flow is full of history, playing host to shipwrecks, Vikings and an oil terminal. So you can see why Andrew Heath’s imagination was sparked by the place and how that turbulent past has been translated into the ebb and flow of musical interludes forming this album. It’s quietly haunted by and yet finds peace in the waters and you can feel that liquid reflection washing over you in undulating waves of sonic motion as you listen. It’s also seems peaceful too. Still. Calm. Serene. But there are always hidden depths to be aware of when navigating the composer’s journey, as he traverses high and lows, a sense of longing, a contrast of loss, with delicate, ever respectful charm. Another finely attuned piece of music for the soul.
